On the day Raghav Chadha would have loved to be in Jalandhar to celebrate the Aam Aadmi Party’s return to the Lok Sabha via the byelection caused by its former Congress MP’s death, he got engaged to Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra, the sister of Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
The normally somnolent Kapurthala House – once the sprawling Delhi home of Kapurthala’s Maharaja Paramjit Singh and now Punjab’s Governor and Chief Minister’s official residence in Delhi – was buzzing with activity on a hot Saturday afternoon.
As photographers and videographers jostled for the best angle, shouting out requests to the arriving guests to pose, and exchanging names excitedly, workmen arrived with last-minute deliverables, the granthi sauntered in, and Bollywood favorite designer Manish Malhotra darted in and out with Parineeti’s dress for the event before returning to join the party formally.
As the paparazzi expected a rush of Bollywood and political celebrities, the action only began after the evening settled in this quieter part of Lutyens’s Delhi across the street from the Taj Mahal. Both families kept the event low-key and only intended for close friends and loved ones earlier in the evening.

As she drove into The Lodhi Hotel after flying in from Mumbai in the morning with her sister, Priyanka flashed a victory sign. Her seniors in the Rajya Sabha, both representing West Bengal, both walked in and smiled for the photographers before Chadha arrived — ace Supreme Court advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi with wife, ghazal and Sufi singer Anita Singhvi, and Derek O’Brien with wife, Tonuca Basu.
Singhvi displayed the paper bag he held, containing a couple’s present. Then came the important political figures– Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann with his iconic yellow turban and bright grin, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accompanied by Sunita Kejriwal, Aditya Thackeray from Shiv Sena (UBT) and P. Chidambaram, former finance minister and Congress Rajya Sabha MP just after receiving news of his party’s triumph in Karnataka.
They were taking a well-deserved break on a day when the Karnataka election results dominated the nation’s attention; nevertheless, their conversation must have been about the changing political narrative without a doubt.
