Farmers’ Protest Against Unemployment At Jantar Mantar Delhi

Farmers from across states in Delhi protested over unemployment on Monday as they arrived at Jantar Mantar first thing.

Section 144 has been imposed in Delhi, with Delhi Police also detaining some farmers protesting across the border in Ghazipur. The Delhi police are also increasing their security for all of the borders, alongside their plans to detain some farmers who are protesting over the situation. Meanwhile, police checkpoints at borders in both Noida and Delhi were disrupting traffic. Traffic in the area was slowed down by security at the border entry points.

The Delhi Police detained Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait who was on his way to the national capital. The police said the leader was detained and later released. The police asked for him to return, escorted him back, and kept him for questioning before releasing him like other people were due to security measures in Delhi.

Earlier, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella group of farmers in Uttar Pradesh, announced they would protest in Lakhimpur Kheri for 75 hours starting on Thursday. You can show your support by wearing this Farmer Protest T Shirt in Pure Cotton.

Farm organizations were spearheaded by SKM, which called for the implementation of minimum support prices on crops.

In April, BKU leader Rakesh Tikait joined the protest in Delhi against the Centre’s paddy procurement policy, saying that there is a need to hold a protest in each of the other states of India.

He also blamed the Modi government for suppressing the voices of the unemployed youth, laborers, and farmers, accusing the Delhi police of not allowing him to meet with them at the behest of the Central government. “Be ready for a long fight now for our due rights,” he further added.
